There have been several permanent settlements for Tibetan exiles in India since China’s invasion of Tibet in 1956. I was privileged to visit two settlements in the state of Karnataka. My visit to the settlement in Mundgod coincided with the Dalai Lama’s visit to open a new assembly hall. He used the occasion to give teachings to the many visitors from all over India and the world who had made the journey to see him. I also spent time at the settlement in Bylakuppe near Mysore. Both communities were open and welcoming.
